Biomutant (2021)

Games

Clunky menus, weak dialogue

The world is vast and the character agile, but the menus are awkward and the size of the world is used as an excuse to recycle assets, so much so that you seem to explore the same place over and over. The main problem is the plot and the dialogue, weak and unclear, with flashbacks that could be better and only a few music tracks. Extraordinarily promising, it remains a nice experiment that, especially in its dialogue, could have been improved enormously.

DanMachi (2015)

Anime

Great, but with one big gap

It blends isekai stats with battle shōnen fights in a vast, interconnected world. The harem element weighs the series down, though less than people say and less than in DanDaDan. The most serious problem is the storytelling, which is merging with the spin-off Sword Oratoria, of which only one season has aired and whose protagonist is a less likeable copy of Bell, yet which is needed to understand the world. It still entertains me, but adapting such a vast world is very hard.

Blasphemous 2 (2023)

Games

Not as good as the first one, but more of an RPG

The Andalusian Baroque pixel art, the sacred music and a finely balanced difficulty with only one real spike, at Eviterno, are all still there, while the RPG mechanics, with the rosary and the altar system, and the platforming grow. It reuses the same stylistic elements a bit too much and is less innovative, but it remains a beautiful game, perhaps slightly less beautiful than the first, which is best played before coming here.

Companion (2025)

Movies

It tries to be a horror film, but it really is much more of a thriller

The film soon turns into a bloody reality show of investigations, misdirection and twists, in a single location that never feels claustrophobic. As often happens, the thriller side and a few action elements dampen the horror's pathos somewhat, and the soundtrack is anonymous. It is a lot of fun and entertaining, despite a few flaws.

Angel's Egg (1985)

Movies

A difficult watch, because it demands a lot of interpretation

It is a personal, post-apocalyptic reinterpretation of Noah's Ark, with fossilised animals, fishermen chasing the shadows of fish and a disaster caused by humanity's own weapons. With no explicit dialogue, the film relies on glances, ambient sound and experimental direction, but some rituals, such as the collecting of water flasks, remain incomprehensible. Difficult, at times too cryptic and heavy, it is reserved for lovers of arthouse cinema.

The Chronicles of Narnia (1950-1956)

Books

A fairy tale for children, but not a harmless one

I expected a harmless fairy tale, but Lewis does not keep children in a pen, because the protagonists fight and, when needed, kill, and the overall pattern reminded me a lot of isekai anime. It is an enjoyable read that keeps you hooked for hours, even though some of the middle novels get heavy. If you love adventure and know you are holding a fairy tale, this cycle is for you.

Blasphemous (2019)

Games

Beautiful, but far too cryptic

The pilgrimage-like atmosphere, with death as excommunication and Guilt to atone for at the altars, is accompanied by Spanish and sacred music and exquisite pixel art. It looks harder than Dark Souls, but damage and exploration are well balanced and only the final bosses raise the bar. It is perhaps too cryptic and has to be pieced together bit by bit, but I strongly recommend it to genre veterans with quick reflexes.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (2018)

Anime

The slime becomes way too strong

The progression is linear and the characters become exponentially stronger with every arc, until the combat mechanics are exhausted and the protagonist is almost unbeatable, a typical flaw of isekai series. The first season is still fun, with exploration, pace and driving music, and Ramiris' labyrinth and the battle against the orcs are its best moments. A decent anime that deserves a watch, but from the third season onwards the pace slows down.

Obsession (2025)

Movies

Scary, but a few of the closing scenes deserved another pass

The sound design is unforgettable, with a hidden, cryptic rhythm in every scene, and the Wishing Willow becomes a deep and disturbing riddle. Some scenes towards the end break the tension, though, and in my view the Willow should have worked only for the protagonist, to feed the paranoia of an artificial love. Apart from a few rough edges, it is a horror film that manages to scare and that I enjoyed.

Fire Force (2019)

Anime

An utterly ordinary battle shonen about fire

The art immediately betrays the hand of Soul Eater's author, while the plot looks like a linear battle shōnen in the vein of Fairy Tail and reveals its crazier side only over time, on a slow burn that takes two or three seasons to show that nobody is entirely right. Compact episodes, handy for an evening, for a perfectly ordinary series that offers a bit of carefree fun.
